Why can't that one person, from your group of high school friends, get it together since graduation?

Our group formed the summer before I started my freshmen year during camp for (american) football. I went to a private catholic school about 30 minutes from my house and several of us happened to live close by each other so we car pooled to school and practice and became a very tight-knit squad. The school was a powerhouse in football and most guys went there for that exact reason so they could have a chance to possibly land a scholarship. Football was pretty much our lives and all but two (of six) of us got Division 1 full rides. One of our friends took the disappointment in stride and understood that the playing era of football was over for him, he became a student athletic trainer at his college and recently started coaching at a nearby high school. Couldn't be happier doing it either, one of those people who just knows something the rest of us don't because they always seem genuinely joyful. My other buddy didn't adjust to his situation as well though. He used to do the same workouts as us and go to the same combines and recruiting events as us and there isn't anything wrong with that. But reality was that he didn't have as much talent as most the other guys and it seemed apparent to everyone but him. We would discuss offers and potential school interests and would he respond by straight up lying about giant schools like Alabama and Ohio State "blowing up his phone" in order to one up the rest of us. Eventually he started compulsively lying about any topic, mostly girls he had supposedly got with. This essentially black listed him with many of the school's females and he didn't want to hear anything we had to say about how his actions were effecting him. Graduation came and everybody went to begin the next part of their careers; after none of his fake offers materialized, he walked on (on the team without any scholarship) at a D2 school and quit after less than a month. Transferred to a D1 school where he tried to walk on but did not make it. Blinders still not removed, he tried walking on again next season at the third school he transferred to but didn't make it again, this time because of grades. He is now just taking online classes at a junior college but tells people he is a "fifth year senior" at a nearby state school to attempt to maintain the illusion that he is associated with a team and explain why he is academically equivalent to a sophomore after five years of college. Just smokes weed all day long and refuses to face reality so he can find some direction. It used to really piss me off to observe him exist sometimes but lately it has evolved into pity, I really hope he eventually finds his calling.
