CMV: we have underestimated the amount of abusive or just terrible parents

I do think that a lot of parents try hard, and love their kids, but straight up do not know what to do in many situations. And that’s normal life I guess...we are never really prepared for anything. But the problems are compounded enough now to be exploding. We’re also more open talking about it.

I am one generation removed from the parenting style that raised children to fear the belt, and to never look their own father in the eye. My dad tried to break that cycle but did not really know how. He made a lot, a LOT, of mistakes along the way. I have so much pain from being a part of the process. And I can see a lot of people are dealing with generational traumas like that.
