They are the same when used in the sense of 'delicious' or 'tasty.' 旨い is the standard kanji and 美味い is an 当て字.
１ （「美味い」とも書く）食物などの味がよい。おいしい。「―・い酒」「山の空気が―・い」⇔まずい。
Some people may be using these two differently, mostly based on the difference of the comprising kanji (旨 and 美味), but it is just personal preference in my opinion.
うまい has other meanings:
２ 物事の運びが自分の望むとおりである。都合がよい。好ましい。「―・い話には気をつけろ」「―・く行けばよいが」⇔まずい。
３ （「上手い」「巧い」とも書く）技術的にすぐれている。また、事の進め方などが巧みである。じょうずだ。巧妙だ。手際がよい。「―・い絵」「―・く言い逃れる」「人使いが―・い」⇔まずい。
４ 人間関係、特に男女の仲がよい。「彼女とは―・くやっている」
美味い isn't used for these, as the dictionary entry suggests. That said, I feel that 「美味い話」 is fine whereas 「美味く行く」 looks strange.
Also, I don't see 「旨く行く」 often in contemporary Japanese. 「上手く行く」 and 「うまく行く」 are far more common.
