A couple posts have led me to ask: what is your opinion on gender roles?

I just want to point out some ways gender roles can slowly creep into our self-consciousness and affect our lives.

One example could be of a girl beating a boy she has a crush on at a videogame while they play with their friends (male and female). The girl may feel guilty about beating the boy because it may emasculate him, and she may fear that he may not like her anymore (in any sense) because she impinged on his "masculinity"; he may be taunted by their friends about being "beat by a girl" as if it were demeaning instead of a fair match; the girl may feel like her feminity is called into question if she's good at videogames, and may therefore opt to purposefully lose to boys to avoid judgement.

On a similar note, men who are very interested in fashion may have their sexuality questioned. They even coined a term for guys who show an "unusual interest in their appearance" (although it may be comparable to a women's interest): the metrosexual. These men may find themselves defending their sexuality to their peers, including women they're interested in. They may perceive men who are interested in fashion/grooming as too "feminine" - or rather, not "masculine" enough. On the flip side, some men who would like to put more effort into their aesthetic may avoid doing so because they don't want to appear to be emasculate.

The point of my argument isn't to pick a side in the debate but rather illustrate the subtlety of these ingrained social "norms" and how they may limit self-expression for both genders. The issue here lies in how one's interests or behaviour may stigmatized or labelled "weird" or abnormal when it would otherwise be considered quite typical if they identified as the opposite* gender.

*Although I doubt I'll be picked apart here, I need to clarify that I'm addressing gender in binary terms since we're talking about traditional roles.
