Young is a right-wing culture warrior. The challenge for the Conservatives is that unlike in America, where there is usually a clear line (yes, even for Donald Trump) between the actual 'far right' and the regular right, in the UK it's much more of a spectrum. Eg. The Spectator's most famous columnist, Taki, also has his own far-right site which was edited by Richard Spencer for a number of years. There's a more relaxed attitude to things, which is why you have people like Liam Fox happy to talk to the Swinton Circle or Rees Mogg to the TBG - even though they 'apologised' afterward.

So you often have people with quite a lot of easily-accessible baggage who are just assumed by the party to be standard Tories, if a little on the edgy side, who are actually rather a lot more controversial.
