Double the blessings! Love Chance’s delivery on this track, it’s varied, emotional, and heartfelt. Some great lyrics here too, with Chance proving his talent at creating beautiful imagery and tone. I particularly like the opening lines here (I speak of promise lands, Soil as soft as momma's hands, Running water, standing still, Endless fields of daffodils and chamomile, Rice under black beans, Walked into Apple with cracked screens). Unfortunately, the chorus is extremely boring, especially considering I was pretty tired of the gospel sound at this point in the album. Bland instrumentation and lack of creative places to go with the gospel sound really hurt the second part of this track and was a poor end to the album.

I have to make a note of the mixing on this album, as there were a handful of tracks that I feel like were heavily fucked up. There really is no excuse for a project of this size to have poor mixing and really dampened what was already a mediocre project.

Colouring Book was not a bad album. You can still hear Chance’s musical strength shine through in a variety of tracks and you can tell he really did want to make this a shining moment of hip hop in 2016. He came through with some great verses, and also some just okay ones. He brought on some great features as well as some unwanted ones. The gospel sound worked great on tracks like the first Blessings, and not so great on tracks like How Great. This dichotomy of quality makes this a pretty uneven project and keeps it from being one the better projects of the year so far.

I wish Chance really experimented with the gospel sound instead of just slapping on choirs to a lot of the tracks. There is so much you can do with a large cast of voices and their utilization felt incredibly boring to me. You can tell Chance was afraid to make this album weird because it is his true foray into the general public’s rotation. When you have so many artists doing crazy things sonically, dropping a project like this just kind of pales in comparison.

If I had to apply some sort of rating to this I would probably give it a 6, or a C, or whatever system people are using to give out irrelevant grades.

I was so hoping Chance would drop something great, but instead gave us something that lacked any sort of punch. I find it funny that on a night that was supposed to be all about Chance, Schoolboy dropped a song that was more interesting than anything on Colouring Book.

If Chance wants to snatch a grammy maybe he has to sell it AND make it great.

Props to Chance though for being a great ambassador for the genre.
