Defence royal commission calls for simplified claims system, removal of backlog

It's insane veterans are waiting two to three years for basic claims to be handled, but not surprising.

DVA receives claim.

Ignores claim for 18 months because they won't hire enough staff.

Begins to process claim. Ignores medical diagnosis, demands new diagnosis, then sends claim for review by one of DVA's doctors to get another diagnosis.

Reject claim on an incorrectly interpreted technicality.

Get claim overturned on appeal (this happens with MOST claims sent to appeal).

Send claim for compensation. Again veteran waits a year or more.

Require new forms from doctors, specialists.

Ignore this diagnosis, send it off for weeks to be reviewed by DVA's doctors for no reason.

Decide patient isn't 'stable' despite doctor, specialist clearly stating this. Veteran now needs to wait another 12 months for new decision.
