Did I get trolled with my build?

If you want to overclock, this is what you need:

  • unlocked cpu so you can overclock it.

  • cpu cooler

  • motherboard: full ATX, usb 3.0 headers, MSI OC genie, crossfire enabled for when you get your 2nd gpu.

  • 2 sticks of ram, take advantage of dual channel, esp since you wont need more for gaming. plus redundancy if one fails.

  • Swapped your hitachi deathstar drive for a more reliable seagate, for less $$.

  • Upgraded your psu to an EVGA gold rated 750W, because R9 280x2 draw a hell of a lot of power, ideally you'd go a bit higher to have some headroom.

Not sure whether you can/want to change what youve got. But this is a build that allows you to push your cpu and take advantage of future expansion with a secondary gpu.

If youre not going for the R9 280x2, then you dont need the psu upgrade. And if you are not going to change your cpu etc (its too late, or too much hassle), then you can drop down to an H97 like this Asrock, since you wont be overclocking. (The extra cooler is still useful to keep temps down tho).

I would chuck an ssd in there at sompoint; something like the Samsung 850 evo 250GB

Sorry to throw your build to the wolves - it is perfectly functional, but there are options to push it.

Hope you work something out.
