While the other answers are all correct, they lack the entire context. Many Americans hate the fact that we have an electoral system. Or, the way that it currently functions makes it a hot bed for faithless or bad actors. In short, many states do not need to abide by their citizen's popular vote.

In my opinion, because electors can face no penalty in deciding their own party for political or monetary gain, the system itself is completely broken. Even with penalties in place, they only act as mere slaps on their wrists. This is why many of us here think that our votes don't count.

America needs two things:

  1. Dissolve the electoral college. It is completely useless in today's age.
  2. Reform all voting to ranked choice voting.

Until that happens, corporations are going to continue brainwashing people to be afraid of progress.
