[Discussion Thread] Friday Night Thread Fest!

I'm spending a fucking friday night cleaning my flat because I have to show it to a bunch of people tomorrow who all want to be the next tenant. And I wasn't given any warning by the landlord that 10 people would phone me up in the space of 90 minutes and desperately demand to come and see my flat sooner than humanly possible. Cunts.

As an aside, for those of you who don't know, I live in Sweden and the housing situation is very different here/there compared to Scotland. Renting a flat come in two flavours: a first-hand contract, and a second-hand one. Pretty much every flat in the city is owned by one of a few large housing associations (my one, Poseidon, owns dozens of buildings around the city). A first-hand contract (a contract directly with the housing association) is essentially like an ongoing lease - once you have it, you're made as they basically have almost no right to evict you or terminate your contract. Many people rent like this their whole lives. The rents are set centrally according to the average across the city so you can't really get ripped off. The queues for a first-hand contract are literally years.

A second-hand contract is between you, the hapless victim, and someone who holds a first-hand contract. It's like the wild west, you're on your own, and you will get ripped off. Also, you have zero rights and could be evicted tomorrow. But given the queues for the 1st hand contracts, and the constant influx of foreign students with 0 days in the queue, there's definitely a healthy market for these exploitative contracts. The government has actually even relaxed the rules to make it easier to exploit people. Cunts.

Anyway, I'm moving to a new flat but my current contract says that I must be available to show prospective tenants around until I leave. The landlord gave me no warning and so my door will be knocked down by 10 (they offer it to 5 people at a time, and the one who officially says 'yes' with the longest queue-time gets it) very desperate people.

This is annoying because a) I have to spend tonight cleaning and tidying for them. And more importantly b) I had planned to go cycling tomorrow but now I can't. Cunts.

I have set myself the goal this month to cycle 100km in one trip (a 'metric century') this month. Not so much if you're an avid cyclist, but because the winters are so long here I almost start completely afresh every march and have to work up to the previous year's fitness levels. As this weekend is the last opportunity to meet my goal this month, I have to attempt it or else I will be very angry with myself.
