Doctors of Reddit, what was the MOST incorrect self-diagnosis you've encountered in your practice?

Oooh, this just grinds my gears. I went to the ER a few months ago due to severe chest pains. Heart monitor alarm went off three times while I was in there because of my erratic heartbeat. Doctor didn't find anything on the xray, told me I was just having anxiety and acid reflux, prescribed me Zantac and kicked me out, despite all my protests. As soon as I got home, my GERD actually started acting up, and I got to enjoy the feeling of having both my esophagus AND my heart on fire. Chest pains and erratic hearbeat lasted for about a week after that and then went away. I'm pretty sure the sac around my heart was inflamed, since that's happened to me before.

I've been to multiple doctors in the past few years in an attempt to figure out what's going on with me, since I have a lot of really weird symptoms that seem to pop up all at once and then vanish weeks later. And yet none of them have been inclined to do more than tell me to get more exercise and more sunlight, despite the fact that I look like I've rolled in poison ivy if I'm exposed to the sun for more than a few minutes.

Almost three years after I started seeking answers, I finally found someone willing to at least listen and not start tuning me out thirty seconds in- an OB/GYN, of all people, and she's currently testing me for lupus, among many other things, since I did my research on all the OBs around here and specifically asked to be referred to her after my latest miscarriage. She's simply awesome, and if she manages to solve this long-standing mystery, I might regain some faith in the field of medicine.

Sorry for the rant. I'm quite passionate in my extreme frustration.
