Donald Trump says Mexican government 'forces many bad people into our country': "We rate the claim Pants on Fire."

There are several problems I have with this.

  • It shows that immigrants use welfare benefits at higher rates than natives. Most of them are using food stamps. Per person not much is spent. Medicaid is provided to the elderly and young which I'm ok with. $500 Billion dollars are spent on all 8 welfare services, 50 billion of that is spent on food welfare. Since hispanics are around 20% of the population probably about 100Billion of that is spent on hispanics. In the grand scheme of things that is NOTHING. Think about all the damages a handful of corporations and lobbyists have done to this country in the past 10 years and that will dwarf any burden our immigrant population MIGHT put have put on it over 60 years.

  • It shows that most of these immigrants have jobs but very few pay into income tax. This statement is misleading since income tax accounts for only 20% of all tax revenue in the country. All immigrants pay into the tax system but are typically only using up tax revenue from a couple welfare systems. Their property taxes they pay indirectly through rent pays for their kids schooling. Food stamps do not cost American tax payers a lot of money. Sales tax, property tax, and license taxes account for 80% of all tax revenue which immigrants all pay into.

  • The article does not conclude that immigrants (legal or illegal) are a fiscal burden on the US. It only shows that immigrants have twice the use of our less costly welfare systems. Whatever. If they are putting into the tax system we have an obligation to provide them with at least some kind of benefits. I would argue that they are likely to be a fiscal BENEFIT to the US for the reasons I stated above.

-This article also does not touch on other benefits of a non fiscal nature. The military is being serviced by servicemen and women that are increasingly hispanic, many of whom ARE NOT CITIZENS. About 4% of our armed forces are illegal immigrants and many of them are being deported back to Mexico after serving. They grow your food, maintain your cities and fight your wars for you and you are worried about giving food tickets and medical attention to their children via welfare services? Fuck that!
