Drivers of Reddit, what are some terrible habits to avoid, or other safety tips for a new driver?

Turn your cell phone off or on silent and keep it screen faced down. No radio on so you can actually focus on what you are doing and what others around you are doing. Look in your mirrors and check over your shoulder for the blind spots before you switch lanes. When at a red light keep an eye on your back mirror to make sure the car coming behind is actually slowing down. When the light turns green look all directions to make sure everyone is stopped before going.

If you see a motorcycle give that person room and try to let them get in front of you so you don't take a chance and hit them. When behind a semi stay 4 to 5 car lengths behind it so the driver can actually see you. any closer and he won't know you are behind him. Semi trucks take a 100 yards to come to a complete stop with an empty trailer and dry roads. they can't stop instantly when you cut infront of them. So make sure if you need to be infront of one you get 4 to 5 car lengths before you get infront of one.

listen for sounds of tires screeching across the road, listen for sirens, listen to other cars driving near you. If you see an animal like a cat, bird, anything smaller than a deer or cow, don't swerve to try to miss it, you could lose control and crash or kill someone else.

A car is as deadly as any other weapon out there, it should not be taken for granted and considered a fun thing to do. 95% of car wrecks happen with in 3 miles of your home, the others are from people not paying attention, eating, drinking, singing, texting, talking on the phone, or even putting make-up on while driving or even sexual stuff. It seems like fun and games till shit hits the fan and you or someone else gets killed.

Radios are the biggest thing, they distract you while you sing and dance in the car lose attention to what you are doing. not fully paying attention, cell phones are the next biggest thing.
