EVO 2016 lineup revealed. Eight games, including Pokken Tournament

There was a long stretch of EVO's where both Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and Street Fighter 3: Third Strike were both on the main stage at every EVO but unfortunately when SF4 came out they pretty much dropped both games.

I'm more disappointed that they dropped SSF2T and SF3:3S which I still feel have a place - SSF2T was the original great 2D fighting game and created the whole fighting game community, it was also so wel balanced that it still held up at high level competitive play 20+ years after it came out (there was a while there where people said it was always gonna be part of EVO).

SF3:3S was another great game that, in my opinion, is way more technical and difficult (execution-wise) than SF4 and actually plays very differently from the other SF games in the series because the parry mechanic changed how people played the game - less emphasis on zoning and fundamentals and more emphasis on rush-down, footsies, hit-confirming, combos, mind games etc. - so I felt like it had it's place on the main stage right next to any other SF game because it played so differently (and was fun as hell).

SF4 and SF5 are (in my opinion) a little too similar both in gameplay and design philosophy and I can understand why it's sort of pointless having both games on the same stage. I remember the community being somewhat divided over SF4 when it was first announced because it was so much simpler than SF3. This was of course a conscious effort on Capcoms part to bring in new players and also bring back all the casual gamers who grew up during the arcade era but forgot about it, obviously a good idea that paid off (I remember the final days of the arcade scene in the mid-2000's and no one thought we'd ever see a new SF game, so I was really happy to see this game announced). With SF4 they brought the series back to basics, sure they added in little things like focus attacks to add a depth and keep veterans happy but it was way easier and more accessible than the alpha, SF3 series, etc. SF5 feels like an even more basic version of SF4 to me and both games play at pretty much the same speed, they traded focus attacks for v-triggers (which don't add much in my opinion) and the game feels mostly like SF4 with better graphics and less learning curve. I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing (I was personally hoping for a more technical game than SF4 and maybe some new mechanics that we hadn't seen before) but gameplay and design-wise SF5 is just an even more accessible version of SF4 so why even bother having two of them at EVO? Just have the community drop the old version and move on to the latest one rather than have a community divided over two games that are essentially the same.
