Fondly reminiscing upon the time that some random hunter raped her (Fools Crow - James Welch)

I mean, what time period was this set in? Until recently I’d imagine women spent a lot of time thinking about men because they didn’t really have control over their lives and to be thinking of a world where they weren’t controlled by men would have probably been just a fantasy. Obviously that’s terrible, but I mean, so were they ways that women were treated in the past. Is it possible that the author is trying to bring that point to light rather than being sexist? Wouldn’t it be unrealistic to set a book in some medieval time period and pretend the women had rights? Like, if someone wrote a book set in USA during the civil war, would it be racist to have African Americans as slaves? Again, terrible, but isn’t awareness for human rights violations in the past the “woke” thing to do?
