In 2017, I had a conversation with some older relatives about my concerns regarding the incoming administration. I highlighted the fact that I married into a brown immigrant family who felt very targeted by the hate rhetoric. Results were very mixed, to put it mildly.

At one point, I calmly observed that our then president-elect was a former reality tv star, who was good at manipulating media coverage. I don't know if I'll ever forget the expression of shocked horror on the face of my nutty Fox News stepmother. It's an objectively true statement, but she was horrified someone could be so "disrespectful" to the leader her party put in charge.
