I know semantics are unimportant in the scheme of things, but I feel the need to set people straight on this:

Less than 24 weeks: miscarriage More than 24 weeks: stillbirth

Don’t read further if you can’t handle body horror

They’re both terrible losses that result in mourning and trauma. However, a stillbirth requires going through the long and painful process of induced labor, like how someone would have a live child, and giving birth to a 2-10 pound, fully-formed but deceased fetus. It’s like a horrible added layer of inhumanity to be on the maternity ward, recovering from birth with no actual baby, and then having to deal with things like your milk coming in because your body doesn’t understand. Having experienced this personally, it’s hard to compare to something like a first trimester miscarriage. Which, again, is traumatic and physically painful, but it’s not the same thing.
