Hi, I guess I'm part of the club now....I have questions

This is not full of stupid questions! These are all very legitimate things that we all worried about when we were first diagnosed! I was diagnosed just like you were--seizure a few months before my 21st, couldn't remember anything, mangled tongue, felt awful afterwards. It's definitely a scary thing and quite an adjustment. But remember that this is a really ancient condition, and in time, you'll be in control of it. Everyone has medical idiosyncrasies, and epilepsy happens to be ours.

All your questions can be answered with a phone call or visit to your doctor or a nurse. Having just gone through this, that's my best advice: don't try to figure out the things that your doctor can just tell you. Just ask about the raving, ask about any questions about medication, how to handle post-seizure time, how your school or work should accommodate you if it's necessary. I didn't talk to by docs as much as I should, so it took me much longer than necessary to get the seizures under control.

For example, strobe lights don't bother me, personally, they might not cause you any trouble either. (It bothers some people with epilepsy, but not everyone--common misconception).

That's not to say that you won't figure things out along the way. You'll have to--and keeping track of the dates and times you seize, how you feel afterwards, whether anything might have triggered it (stress, lack of sleep, missed meds, alcohol) will help you and your doctor control the seizures. There's a lot of trial and error. You can skip a lot of the error by just asking your doctors what to do.

Also remember the proper role for friends and family; if they support you and help you, let them, and if they don't, don't let them. This is your body--not theirs--so don't let anyone pressure you into something you don't want, whether that is going on more or less medication, taking accommodations, when and who to tell someone about it, etc. Do what keeps you healthiest both physically and mentally.
