How can I prepare to be financially independent?

Hold onto that money because college costs rack up quick. Seeing as your not in college yet it's difficult to work out specifics but once you get closer and closer to your first day, you'll get an idea of what you need and how much it costs. Textbooks get expensive so always opt for used books online. School supplies too, get them on discount at dollar stores. Keep a couple solid pairs of clothes but having like 20 outfits is a no-no, you need to keep it simple.

That's some generic advice to help you transition but again, you'll have a better idea of the full costs of living once you get there and settle in. That's where the budgeting comes in and I'm sure you'll do fine with that. Make sure you set aside a little extra for essentials and gas just in case, better safe than sorry. Otherwise, throw as much money at those loans as you can. Better now while you're not paying interest than later. You'll have less spending money now but there's a big payoff later.

And most importantly, do treat yourself every now and then. Frugal is good but so is having fun. Go out with friends, get involved with some clubs, give the frats and sororities a shot, and just meet people. You have to find that balance between work and play, that'll keep you distracted from the fact you're going to be a broke college student for the next couple of years. But if you play your cards right, working and budgeting, you'll be in really good shape.

And the fact you're putting so much thought into this beforehand is a really good sign. You're on the right path, don't stress out about it too much.
