How we move past blame

well, your brain is a forever-changing entity in general...it's not just a breakup that will kill certain neuropathways, it's pretty much anything that you do that is habitual. for instance, if you stop doing something that you do every single day, those neuropathways are like roads that you stop going down. If you stop going down them for long enough a time (not very long actually!!), the roads will start to shrink and will disappear completely after awhile. Also, the emotional intensity of an experience is directly related to the number of neuropathways created / used. So yeah, this is gonna happen. But, at the same time, your brain is capable of creating new neuropathways all the way until you die. So you can basically change your brain in quite directed ways if you choose to -- pretty much forever -- the brain doesn't really slow down with age. This should be pretty uplifting information for you -- it is for me -- as it means that you have a direct influence over how you want your brain to act. I'ts not easy obviously but that's the basic concept.

Don't be too freaked out by antidepressants -- for the most part they just help your brain keep the neurotransmitters in there and in abundance -- it's not like cocaine, though, the actual mechanism is slightly different. With antidepressants, if they work well for you, and the side effects are tolerable to you, then great, you've got another tool in your arsenal. But they are not AT ALL any type of cure-all or magic pill that will transform you per se. You're still going to have to put in the work to feel better. The antidepressants can help though in taking the edge off the depression so that you can function a bit better.
