How to do non-profit, high trauma lawyering and not be depressed af?

Yes! I worked as an immigrant advocate for 8 years -- so, living and breathing the same kind of awful, traumatic stories, but my personal role was taking those stories to Congress or the media rather than being the legal representation.

You're going to have to decide whether you want to stick it out or not. Neither is good nor bad.

During the years I stuck it out, I tried to separate work from home as much as possible. I worked 8 hrs a day, max, unless something was actively on fire. I did not think about work when I wasn't working. There's always more you can do to save people, but remember that if you are going to do this for the long run, you have to help yourself first.

And then I decided I was done. I worked through the Trump years (not to get political, but it was awful, everyone was getting deported). And I felt bad about leaving, because there are only so many people who want to do this work. But I just couldn't anymore. I literally do corporate law now because it's REFRESHING to take home a paycheck without all of that baggage. I'm sure I'll do nonprofit work again someday but honestly, I am so much happier right now NOT doing it. And that's okay.
