I'm 22(f) and yesterday morning I was told that I have cancer

Hey! I will echo what some people have said and put it into some context and give you a couple of tips.

I feel like as long as I'm not being treated, and no one knows then it isn't real. Once people know then it's real. Then I have cancer.

No... unfortunately you do. So you have to assume responsibility now and take care of yourself. Even if it is caught early you probably have some genetic per-desposition to the disease. Follow up with your doctor (I will probably say this many times before I'm done)

There are many treatment options for breast cancer, and there are also many more being researched as I type this. There are many drugs that have increased overall survival and progression free survival significantly for the breast cancer population. I don't know the specifics of your disease (i.e. genetic mutations ect.) but there are definitely some options to consider. Keep doing what you do every day. I am assuming you are otherwise healthy and active. Eat well, do exercise, go to the movies, eat out, enjoy a day in the park ... and follow up with your oncologist. Don't let the disease dictate how you live your life, but don't forget that you have to follow up on your appointments and scans.

Understand your disease. Read about it; educate yourself. Learn about treating cancer... Learn the difference between treating cancer and curing it. People think that when they are "free of disease" they are "cured"... there are too many components to consider before actually talking about a "cure". Even after being deemed free of disease, please, please please follow up with your oncologist at the specified time-points.

At this point you and your physician will decide on how to approach it. Take it day by day... it might not be easy but I see it every day; day in and day out. Older people, younger people, they all battle it out anyway they can...

Yes. Cancer is a bitch, but some people manage to adapt their lifestyle and it ends up being just another part of their lives.

Stay positive...nothing like having a positive outlook on life

I promise you that if you keep a smile on your face and you follow up on your appointments I will keep waking up every day and doing my part on finding better treatment options (and hopefully, one day a cure) for people like you...

Cheers, CR
