I'm a young environmental scientist investigating the effectiveness of a climate change mitigation technology in boreal, temperate, and tropical systems - Ama!

[–]N-V-G[S] 2 points 58 minutes ago Good question!

I was actually interested in everything (seriously) when I finished high-school. When looking for undergraduate programs, environmental sciences fit my interests the most: biology, chemistry, botany, meteorology, geology. It's a really broad discipline and I am thankful to have learned such a range of things! During my undergrad I was lucky enough to get research opportunities in plant ecology, evolution, and physiology.

I worked on some pretty theoretical things about the evolution of plant physiology, but it lacked the application. When looking for graduate positions I decided that Prof. Sean Thomas (my current supervisor) fit my interests best: he is a graduate from one of the most well-known plant ecology labs at Harvard, but his work is dedicated to applications in forestry, climate change, and the environment.

I contacted him about research unrelated to biochar (I hadn't heard about it previously), and it's actually luck that he had just received a lot of funding for biochar research. I read as much as I could and fell in love with it. The research is a perfect fit. Sometimes the Universe works in mysteries ways!

Thanks!

[–]N-V-G[S] 2 points an hour ago Awesome! I actually took quite a few ecotoxicology courses during my BSc. in Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph! Brilliant stuff.

Advice in what regard? The best advice I can give in general is follow your dreams, and do what you believe in. Research can be enduring, so be guided by your heart! Richard Feynman was a big supporter of this. If there's opportunities to start doing research, the sooner the better! Hope that helps.
