Jury awards boy $31 million for botched circumcision

I’m a medical student who just finished rotating on newborn services, I can promise you, the reason your doc wants to circumcise your kid has nothing to do with making “ a quick buck”. Uncircumcised children are at substantially higher risk for two conditions that can cause massive tissue damage called phimosis and paraphimosis. Essentially because of the elasticity of the immature foreskin, and the lack of supervision and instruction for our young ones, the foreskin can get either forcibly retracted or forcibly extended impeding blood flow to the glans leading to a vascular necrosis and loss of penis. This is in addition to the greater frequency of urinary tract infections which can cause more severe infections like pyelonephritis (kidney infections) and cystitis (bladder infections) and urethritis ( you got this one) which can have a significant impact in the functioning of the urinary system of your child for the rest of their life. The risks of uncircumcised children far exceed the minute risk of complication from the circumcision, and circumcision itself is much less risky the younger you are when you do it.

Most parents, especially dads, are scared of a surgical operation on a penis, but don’t really understand the risks and benefits. If you still don’t want to circumcise your kid, that’s fine, but I don’t want you to think your doctor wants anything else than what’s in your best interest. Typically the doc asking if you want to circumcise your kid isn’t even the one who does throcedure, they don’t get paid for that, they just want to give you the best care possible!

TL;DR — unless you want to make sure your kid is properly cleaning and caring for their foreskin every time they use their penis until they finish puberty, you should probably circumcise your kid. Also be kind to your doctor, they just want to help
