Is living in Pittsburgh expensive?

Depends where. A lot of working class neighborhoods you can buy a decent house on that income no problem. Conservatively, 53k buys you a house worth $100k or less. In the east end alone there's livable homes in that price range in Wilkinsburg, Penn Hills, Verona, Swissvale, Braddock, and even in the city of Pittsburgh in Homewood and Lincoln/Lemington. They're not the best neighborhoods but some are surprisingly decent and a lot of people are able to make ends meet here with a higher quality of life than they could afford in almost any other city.

Granted I'm biased, moving here 5 years ago turned out to be a pretty great decision for me.
