[LPT] Make friends with your buildings maintenance man

Lived in a hole of an apartment complex for a while. The heat in ours never really worked from the start, but in the dead of winter one night (and I live where it gets cold...), our heat goes out completely.

I call the maintenance man. He tells me to turn on the valve that is directly on the pipe, to open up the steam vent or whatever. I do. The apartment gets HOT. Well, at least it's not cold.

Okay. He can deal with it tomorrow. I spend the rest of the night getting up every few hours to switch the valve when I wake up sweating, and then again when I wake up chattering. Bummer. But at least I'm used to getting up, since I'm up most nights right now with the kid anyway...

Several days go by, I call to see if the heat was going to ever be serviced. I am on a waiting list. O-k-a-y.

I wait my turn, which thankfully, is just by the end of that day. Maintenance man comes by, and services the heat. Except, that night, same thing happens.

I reluctantly call mid-night, expecting a late visit to get our heat finally fixed. Instead I'm told; "Just open the window. To balance it out."

Nope. Fuck that. Which is exactly what I told him. (Oops. I was tired. And up with a screaming toddler. And was already getting the run-around on the broken washer/dryer I was paying extra for.) It had been maybe 2 freakin Fahrenheit outside, and windy. And almost 90 inside. Also, the neighborhood wasn't great, not that any whippersnappers are hanging outside my window when it is 2 degrees.

My patience and understanding had run out. I may or may not have selected a few more of my favorite choice words to grace him with. I might have been shouting....it's kind of fuzzy in my mind. I know I got mean...spitting venom, mean. I know it was hard to look him in the eye after that night.

I ended up calling a professional heat guy to come fix it. Which was great, until I had to threaten legal action against the building complex in order to keep a portion of the rent that month, to make up for the maintenance I had to pay for.

Anyway, I tried to be nice to the guy, and not annoying to him, but he had to be in our apartment from day one. And up until that moment, I gave the him the benefit of the doubt...was extra friendly, understanding, cooperative, patient, even apologetic when I had to call him late at night.....

He either never really gave a fuck, or just couldn't give a fuck. I don't know.

TLDR: I tried this LPT. It didn't work out for me :( Yelled at maintenance man, and then hid from him until my lease was up.
