LPT: If someone confides in you with a problem they're having, your first instinct might be to try relating to them with a similar problem you've had. Avoid this as a first response as it often comes off as "one-upsmanship" rather than empathy.

"I wouldn't go as far as to discount anyone who hasn't experienced the same thing..."

Good point. There is a chance that they will have some good advice even if they haven't been through the same. I just haven't really had that experience.

I usually just get the "just get over it" from them. kind of like when i was trying to quit nicotine and people who had never been addicted to something would say "just quit, it cant be that hard". It was absolutely infuriating.

Because of that i have always had the idea that people who haven't experienced something really shouldn't have any say in it as they are often dead wrong and can potentially cause more harm than good.

just look at the anti marijuana advertisements. If they got someone in there who has actually had experience with weed then that person could explain realistic drawbacks that come with using weed. Instead they make ridiculously false claims, leading anyone who does have experience with it to completely dismiss their platform as a misinformed bullshit.

sorry for the rant.
