LPT REQUEST: how to react when someone starts messing with you

Depends.

Words vs. actions.

If someone does something to me, I'm going to reply in kind, and I'm going to escalate it. I will continue to escalate it every time they do. If it comes to punches it comes to punches, but I'm not the one instigating shit and I'm not here to provide you with a target for your social posturing. If we end up having a laugh over it after and getting disapproving glances from people, then whatever, I guess. Obviously you want to take this into some context, I'm not going to fuck up a family function or anything over something trivial, sometimes it's better to walk away. But if a stranger starts fucking with you, then see how far he wants to take it.

If someone starts saying stupid shit to me, I'll usually let it go once or twice, but that's about it. I can overlook a little, but I'm going to be pretty quick to make it clear that they need to look elsewhere if they want to start shit because I'm not here to play games and if I get dragged into a conflict I'm going to finish it quick so I can go back to having a good time.

And for the record, it doesn't matter much if the guy is bigger than you. If you make it clear to someone that you will gladly get the shit kicked out of yourself to make sure they eat a few punches then it's rare for people to decide you're worth the hassle, and the ones that do are the kinds of assholes who would've fucked with you either way.

Note: I lack social graces. I grew up in a shitty neighborhood where if you let people walk on you, it gets worse, and worse and worse. You gotta look after yourself, 'cause nobody else will. I could exercise more tact, but I don't because I don't really think taking the "high-road" is universally the best choice. Nobody is anyone else's bitch, and I'm not going to stand by while some insecure dipshit tries to get away with as much as he can. In other words, if you want to have good social skills, I don't think my options are the best ones. People trust me and think I'm funny, but I wouldn't likely be described as charming (except when I've had a few drinks).
