Meltzer on if the Great Muta should be in the WWE Hall of Fame

Do you not remember how much Ultimate Warrior shit they sold when he went into the Hall of Fame? Even before he died, they were selling like crazy. His last promo on RAW started with him putting on a Warrior mask WWE was selling. Same with Savage, they sold a lot more of his merch when he went into the Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame isn't just about making money, but it's an absolute byproduct of it. That's why it's televised, that's why they sell tickets to it (it used to be a much smaller affair), and that's why it's during Wrestlemania weekend, so they can sell merch at Axxess of the Hall of Famers going in. Plus, they'll show up in the video game that year.

Owen Hart isn't going to sell a huge amount of anything, because he never was that guy, but WWE will certainly make money off of his induction and give the appearance of the circumstances of his death being settled I.E. Not WWE's fault.

WWE did the same thing when Warrior went in. A well-known and well-documented rift between Warrior and WWE was healed and now it's like it never happened. THAT'S what WWE wants more than anything else, especially with a guy like Owen who didn't have much merch.

And most would agree that his death was a tragic accident and not negligence on the part of WWE, but Owen's widow doesn't see it that way. She still blames WWE for his death and she doesn't want them to make a penny off of him. She refused to let them make a DVD about him or even include him in DVDs about the Harts for years. She sued them over it.

WWE doesn't want to put Owen Hart in the HOF to make money, they want to do it as a PR move that appears to absolve them of any responsibility in his death. And Owen's widow won't allow that.
