Do I miss out by not being in an active guild? And what are the alternatives?

Can someone seriously tell me what he is missing? The need for a guild has been completely removed by the group-finder tool.

Unless you are aiming for hardcore progression, the only thing a guild is going to offer you is this:

1) Extra chat from players you don't know 2) Raid times and requirements that add pressure to your daily life 3) Drama 4) Heirlooms

Honestly. What is the point of being in a guild these days. Their usefullness has been dwindling since vanilla.

So long as CRZ and LFG exist in the game, the need to have a well organized group of players on the same server has vanished for 80-90% of players.

10 years ago: I had to join a guild to even think about getting a purple piece of loot from Molten Core. I remember applying, spending a lot of time on my application, and being ecstatic when I got approved.

Why do I need to join a guild today, when I can do everything without one.

The guild I am in today is my own guild with a few real life friends whose subs aren't even active. I'm happy with this.
