[MODPOST] Sunday Free Write: A Rule Addition Edition

This is a small piece of a book I'm working on. Let me know what you think.

ROSE

THUNK. I hit it. The wolf falls to the earth with a yelp and is silent. No one moves, no one says a word. I had never killed an animal before. I slowly walk towards the bloodied creature and realize that’s its still breathing, she’s still breathing. A tinge of regret enters my hearts when she utters a low whine, I can see fear in her eyes. The intelligence in them puzzles me. At this moment all I want to do is comfort her, to make her last breaths peaceful. Then I notice something, almost too quick to be recognized, she flicks her eyes back towards her den ever so slightly. I keep watching and again she glances towards her den. “Please no” is my first thought. As soon as I take a step towards her home she lets loose another weak whine, and my suspicions harden. A step away from her den is when I first begin to hear it, the soft cry of a wolf pup, her pup. Without thinking, I reach for the small animal and pick it up in my arms. It looks like it’s barely opened its eyes. I walk back over to its mother quickly and crouch down next to her. Maybe her family will be the best thing to ease her pain. I let the pup down next to her muzzle, so that she can see and smell her child. She allows it to play on her muzzle for a minute then gives it one last bath. Her eyes focus on me, and I realize I’ve had her paw in my hand. Then out of the blue, she licks the back of my palm. Whether it was meant to be meaningful I don’t know, but I take it as forgiveness. Then she lets out one last, shallow breath, and she’s gone. The intelligence in her eyes vanishes, and her pup lies next to her. It doesn’t know what happened. Sly is the first to address me, she swoops down form her perch on the tree and gives me a hug so tight I think my ribs will shatter. Then she holds me with both her arms outstretched and I can see her eyes glistening, I can tell she wants to cry. “I haven’t seen an act of kindness like that in ages, what you did for her,” she gestures towards the wolf “was so sweet, and besides the arrow in her side, also the most gentle.” I’m at a loss for words; I had not thought of what I was doing, I only acted on my hearts feeling. Emotions that I felt run from the mother wolf through me. “Welcome to the family,” I hear behind me. Tyvin and the others trot up to Sly and I. “That was a really cool thing you did” Nellis tells me. The only thing I can say is thank you as they all give me a brief hug, but I don’t feel right. I look back at the pup that is now licking his mother’s nose, unknowing and helpless. “We can’t leave it here” I say as I point at the pup. Tyvin is the first one to speak. “I agree” he says, “but you know you’ll have to care for it, until it’s old enough to leave.” Determination whirls inside me as tell him I will do it. I reach down and grab the pup and find out that it’s a boy. “You’ll have to think of a name for him you know”, Sly says with her arms crossed, “how about Polm! It’s a great name!” Nellis gives her a nudge with his shoulder and her excitement changes to disappointment. “Fine she can pick his name herself.” Nellis gives her a smile. I raise the pup to my face so than I can get a better looks at him. He has mostly black fur with the exception his underbelly that’s mostly covered with grey fur. His lower jaw also has a small patch of grey, resembling a small beard. The most remarkable thing about his fur however is the two crescent shaped patches of white fur on his otherwise dark colored face. They give his brown eyes a little more life. I utter his name under my breath to hear it aloud, and my decision is made. I settle him back between my arms and chest and say “I’ll call him Nyx.” The moment is snatched away. The earth shakes violently, I look around and see the panic that’s has arisen in my new friends as well. None of us were prepared for what happened next. A roar unlike any I’ve ever heard assails my ears, a long, deep, hate filled sound that sends a shiver through my spine. I feel as though I’m in the middle of a thunderstorm. Just as I begin to think it would never end, it does. Nyx trembles in my arms, whining. Tyvin is the first one to move, he immediately begins running back towards the Haven, turning back only to scream at us to follow. As we sprint another roar sounds, deathly terrifying as the last one, but different. Thoughts begin to swirl in my head as we come close to the Haven. Could it be? Then, my worst fear is realized. I look up and point in disbelief, the only word I could speak was “No”. Far up the sky, with their wings spread and their silvery scales sparkling in the sunlight, are two dragons. A jet of white hot flames bursts from one of them and they continue off into the horizon, eventually becoming lost to my sight, but not my mind, never my mind.
