Monthly What are My Chances? Thread

Hey all, I am primarily posting for help with my school list. My GPA is slightly subpar (with an upward trend) but my MCAT is good so I’m confused as to what types of schools I should be applying to. I’m wanting a relatively small list but a good one for my stats and background. Please be specific with suggestions instead of just saying “mid tier”!

Year in school : BA in Biology and French, graduated in 2015. Just completed year 2 of a post-bacc pre-req courses. Country/state of residence: Nebraska

Schools to which you are applying: University of Nebraska, Dartmouth, Case Western, Temple, Rosalind Franklin, UPitt, GW, Mayo, Tulane, Minnesota – Twin Cities, University of Rochester, Stryker.

Cumulative GPA: 3.65, (4.00 over the past 2 years which was comprised of mostly science courses) Science GPA: 3.59

MCAT Scores: 518 (130/131/128/129)

Research – none outside of coursework

Volunteering (clinical) – HIV/STI testing counselor, approximately 200 hours

Physician shadowing – 24 hours ENT, 4 hours Family Med, 4 hours Oncology, will get at least 40 more during the next year through this program I’m in

Non-clinical volunteering – Camps for youth with T1D and Cancer (2 separate camps, 1200 hours), outdoor education facilitator (100 hours), Habitat for Humanity (4 hours)

Extracurricular activities – I don’t have anything I do regularly since I graduated from college. I used to do intramural volleyball in college, involved in my college’s arboretum, camping, Study Abroad Ambassador. How do I address this in my app?

Employment history – Currently work as an Emergency Medical Scribe and will have done so for approximately 2 years by the time I submit (3500 hours), formerly worked in Campus Ministry at my Undergraduate institution

Immediate family members in medicine? No

Specialty of interest – open to anything, but at the moment I imagine myself pursuing a subspecialty of Internal Med or Pediatrics

Graduate degrees – will complete Master’s in Medical Anatomy in Spring 2017

Interest in rural health (y/n) – not a hardcore interest, but I’m not opposed to it. More likely to serve in underserved urban areas.
