Worked at a 24/7 place. We had six shifts - two sets of four-day 1st, 2nd, 3rd with an overlapping day in the middle. When we started, we had 15 people for these shifts - two per shift plus a "supervisor" on each shift who worked M-F 8-5. As time went on we lost and added people as you'd expect.

Another location lost too many customers and people, so they stopped working weekends. Our weekend folks had to cover for them as much as possible from 1000 miles away. Then another location had the same thing happen, so they piled that location's weekend work on us as well.

Eventually we started losing people and got down to 1 person per "off hours" shift and two during business hours. Corporate said we were fine this way. Me, being one of the business hours folks, would have to now cover nights, weekends, and holidays when someone was out. Which was fine presuming it wasn't that often. It of course became quite common. And then we lost another person so I got stuck on one of these off shifts permanently. And then the other day shift person left. So now we had exactly six people to cover six shifts. There was one "higher" level tech and the site manager besides us. The tech would, if he was feeling generous, cover a day shift if someone was out. But he would, in his words, "quit if someone asked him to work nights even once". Oh, and we were still covering weekends and holidays for those two other locations.

After several months we hear that the second failing location had hired four or five people and we would no longer be covering their weekends. I. Fucking. Lost. It.

Since I worked early I was already home when I heard the news from a co-worker. After checking my savings account I hauled ass back to the office and quit right on the spot. Yeah, it made things worse for the rest of the people for a few weeks. And I felt bad about that. But, within two months they had four more people on staff.
