Obama Bans Machine Guns, Tanks, Grenade Launchers Going to Local Cops

1: cops don't have tanks, don't launch grenades and the term "machine gun" leads people to think of a M60 rather than a 9mm mp5. A civilian, by the way, can own either.

2: SWAT raids are police tactics, not military tactics. The military, traditionally speaking, blows up any hostile structure possible. Traditional military techniques are like covering fire, bombardment, and generally shooting any and all uniformed enemy straight to death. The end goal of a military engagement is to kill the enemy on sight until they surrender or are eliminated. Only relatively recently combating guerrilla tactics and international hostage situations caused the military to shift to more "police" type tactics.

Police tactics, traditionally speaking, involve apprehending suspects in the manner they have found to be least likely to get them killed, financial ruined in a lawsuit or in prison for shooting someone that neednt be shot. A successful police operation is one in which NO ONE gets shot. One can argue that perhaps such tactics are employed too often but its a small wonder that the people who stand to lose the most choose caution. It is not a reasonable argument that special equipment and special tactics are never needed in this country.

No one has shown any way that the police wearing any garment or arriving in any type vehicle violates the rights of anyone in the public. That means the objections are all based upon appearance. Maybe cops should just wear hoodies, that way it will be wrong to judge them based on uniform choices. Research military and police uniforms throughout US history, they have never been totally dissimilar. Camo is a relatively recent uniform for the military. That said, cops can and should respect the views of the public and the way things work in the United States you could voice your opinion on their clothing to a local elected official like the Sheriff or Mayor. President Obama should be concerning himself with the patriot act rather than fashion and smoke and mirrors about "military equipment".

By the way, a lot of these cops: odmp.org probably thought they were in a war and would've appreciated the added protection of a armored personnel carrier.

tldr: cops ain't being militarized, the military is being policized and we are all looking at the wrong thing in the shell game of politics.
