One of history’s greatest philosophers thought work makes you a worse person

For context here:

Aristotle is on everybody's list of top five most influencial people of all time. This guy is a super big deal, and came came right after Plato. Together they from two major schools in philosophical thought known as Platonism and Aristotelianism.

Aristotle was an aristocrat.

In a book of his called The Nichomachean Ethics, we also stated that a life of study is the only life that can lead one to happiness. That a life of mercantilism and politics appears of import but misses the point, and argues that a life of study is the real ticket to happiness. He also thought that happiness can only be determined/achieved (not clear on this, been a bit) at death.

This guy is still important today. Saying he was one of the world's greatest philosophers doesn't cut it. He used to be known as the philosopher. He influenced so much of Islamic, and later Christian, thought.

This guy was so convincing that it wasn't until Descartes came along in the 1600s (iirc) with his Meditations that humanity began to break free from Aristotelian proto-science and begin something closer to the science we have today.
