[Opinion] Why this Subreddit Exists

Of course I understand that there are humans in those uniforms. I'm sure that you understand that people that wear the uniform are representing something larger than themselves.

I'm not sure what statistics has to do with honouring the uniform that you wear and I can't understand why you'd compare the expectations that society places on the behavior of it's police officers with that of a mechanic. There is a huge difference between a cop and a mechanic.

Do you think that the individual is more important than the uniform when on duty? Do you not think that there should be some code of conduct for people in uniform? Why even have a uniform if it's just gonna be a bunch of individuals cruising around enforcing their own sets of rules?

That would be silly.

Society expects a certain level of professional conduct from the police but, as we each have our own personal experiences with cops, we might change our perspective from the ideal to the practical. It might not be fair to you as an individual that people judge you and react to you based on something that happened to them that you weren't involved in but that's just how it works. Tell me that cops don't get jaded as well and walk into situations with preconceived notions...

You're only looking at the negatives. Plenty of departments have good reputations. I've made these points further down the thread but I'll distil some of it for you: people will judge you based upon your uniform and they will expect that you are capable of carrying out the duties of a police officer. We need the uniforms to be uniform. Uniform training, uniform behavior, uniform sense of duty, etc.

If this hurts your feelings as an individual just remember that it's about the uniform, it's not about you at all.
