Okay yes I see your point entirely. I guess my view is that referring to the attraction as a serious psychiatric disorder, rather than something that cannot be confessed to even the most open-minded doctor, might reduce one of the reasons that some people don’t seek treatment.

That said I definitely misspoke — I don’t mean to remove the stigma, just to make it clear that there is a way to manage that psychiatric disease that does not involve abuse. And to remove the “I couldn’t help it, it was an uncontrollable compulsion” excuse that so many offenders seem to trot out, and make it clear that the reason doesn’t matter, there is no room for abuse full stop. For example, I think it’s fair to expect people struggling with this disorder to undergo hormonal therapy that numbs a pedophiles’ sexual attraction entirely, if that’s what it takes to keep them from offending.
