Q4All: How do you handle budgeting, your finances?

1) 27 2) F 3) Married 4) Separate bank accounts, mostly separate savings. Shared bills are split 50/50 - we each pay half of rent, internet, utilities. We split the copay on my birth control. Anything not shared, we pay out of our own money. He supports his little brother through university; I pay off my student loans. Groceries are more-or-less buy what you eat. We live in an urban area, so don't have a car and each handle our own transit costs. I was the one who wanted a dog, and all dog-related costs are my responsibility.

We trust each other to be financially responsible, and having separate accounts means that there's no nagging or oversight on personal expenses. As long as the bills are paid and we make our equal contribution to the shared savings, the rest is for us to spend as we see fit. We don't plan on buying a house ever, and kids are a possibility to-be-discussed in three years.

Roughly half of my monthly income goes toward: rent, bills, above-minimum payments on student loans, dog-related expenses (food, insurance, pet license), groceries, transit, etc. About a quarter is put into shared savings. The rest goes toward things I want, like a nice gaming PC or theatre tickets or new clothes or weed. Anything left over goes into personal savings.

5) My budget is pretty samey. I pay less for expenses now, because I lived alone before getting married.
