/r/Games Game Discussion - RPGs

Hmm, how do you feel about modding games, in general? Objectively, the quality of life improvements in the Enhanced Editions are pretty minor, so you can get the originals at GOG for half the price (20 for both, as opposed to 40).

Personally, I prefer the Enhanced Editions. I get really compulsive about having the "best" experience, so whenever I tried modding/playing the originals (as I'll detail below), I wondered if I was doing it "right." Playing the Enhanced Editions eliminated that anxiety, because I played whatever content they gave me and was happy with it.

Here's the deal: if you don't mind modding and a slightly clunkier experience, get the originals, and then download Big World Setup (http://www.shsforums.net/topic/56670-big-world-setup-an-attempt-to-update-the-program/). This will automatically download and install a bunch of mods, including Baldur's Gate Trilogy, which imports BG1 into the BG2 engine and removes a lot of effort in the whole modding process. Make sure you choose a fairly barebones mod package, though! There are lots of crappy mods in the more robust packages, and for an inexperienced player you're going to want to keep it simple.

Buying the Enhanced Editions will cost you more, but you'll basically be able to have the same epic, one-character experience by importing your BG1 character into BG2 once you've completed the first game. I believe the EEs support additional modding, but you'd have to seek those mods out and install them on your own.

I'm sure purists will insist that modding the original game ultimately leads to the "better" experience, and maybe they're right, but at this point in my life I just want to take the path of least resistance.

Hope that was helpful! This turned into kind of a longwinded explanation - sorry about that.
