Reddit, have you ever seen a bad thing happen to a good person?

I used to post on a relatively popular Internet forum. The moderators on this site are known for being pretty shady. Baiting posters into breaking the rules so they could ban you, banning posters who they didn't like, etc. There was one moderator who was the exact opposite though. He was well liked by the entire community. He was a funny guy, he genuinely cared about the community, and he gave everyone a fair shake. For the sake of this story we'll call him "Jonathan"

Over the course of a few months Jonathan and I became pretty good friends. He was a few years older than me but I didn't care. we would exchange several messages daily. Around this time my depression started to get worse and he was there for me. As it turned out, Jonathan was a social worker for the mentally challenged. It seemed like there was no task that he couldn't take on. During a very rough patch in my life where I felt like I couldn't turn to anybody, I could turn to Jonathan to put things into perspective or just vent

At the beginning of 2014, Jonathan was VERY excited about the new year. Usually when the new year starts I feel very sad, like I've wasted another year of my life. Beginning of 2014 was different though. Jonathan had inspired some hope in me and I was feeling good

A few days pass and I don't hear from Jonathan. At first I didnt think much of it, I figured he had just taken a break from the site. A month goes by and I still didn't think anything was wrong, but I visited his profile to see if he had been logging in. The newest visitor message I saw on his profile made my heart sink

It said "Jonathan passed away" and it had a link to his obituary

I was in shock. Even though the chances of me meeting this guy in person were very slim, even though our only way of communicating was through messaging on this forum. I could not fucking believe it. The one person who I felt comfortable enough to talk to about my issues was gone. He was only 30 years old too. That's way too fucking young to die man. After his death I found out that he also set up events in his community to promote healthy lifestyle changes. This guy never drank, never smoked, and was a vegan. And he died at 30. The world is cruel place but I'll never forget the impact that Jonathan had on me
