A reminder that the Fake News psyop "went live" the exact same day investigators found suspicious codes hidden in the Podesta Emails released by Wikileaks

Looks like it was originally called "Distorted news" back in 2005.

Was updated to "Fake News" in 2006, with the following blurb:

" Norm MacDonald was probably the first to use the term "fake news" in popular culture; the phrase was part of his lead-in when hosting Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live. Since then, it has often been used to describe news satire. Jon Stewart of the Daily Show often uses the phrase "fake news" to describe what he does as well. "

Was changed to "News Satire" in 2008. Stayed that way until late 2016 when it was changed back to "Fake News", with the following blurb:

Fake news may refer to:

  • Fake news site, websites publishing false news to drive web traffic, often using clickbait, to sway opinions or for profit.
  • Hoaxes, false news stories created with the intention to mislead people
  • News satire, imitations of news media created for purposes of entertainment or criticism

2017, this page went NUTS on wiki. Blurb was updated to:

" Fake news is a type of hoax or deliberate spread of misinformation, be it via the traditional news media or via social media, with the intent to mislead in order to gain financially or politically.[1] It often employs eye-catching headlines or entirely fabricated news-stories in order to increase readership and online sharing.[1] Profit is made in a similar fashion to clickbait and relies on ad-revenue generated regardless of the veracity of the published stories.[1] Easy access to ad-revenue, increased political polarization and the ubiquity of social media, primarily the Facebook newsfeed have been implicated in the spread of fake news.[2][1] Anonymously hosted websites lacking known publishers have also been implicated, because they make it difficult to prosecute sources of fake news for slander.[3][4][5][6] "

In February 2017, mentions of Trump and fake news look to have been added to the page. If not before this date.

Very interesting to research using the Wayback machine. Not sure if this helps anything but there you go.
