Sad Irony:Muslim Woman who opened world first liberal mosque in Germany, which accepts both Sunni & Shia, doesn't have women wear veils and allows men & women to pray together, is "receiving death threats every day" from angry Muslims and has had fatwa declared against her by the Egyptian gov

I agree that this shows a dark side of "mainstream" Islam that desperately needs to change, that nobody should be threatened, with death or anything else, merely for practicing (or not practicing) their religion in the way they see fit. And nobody should be allowed to hurt others without a very good reason, even if their "faith" says they can or should. And to borrow Dawkins' term, the "regressive left" all too often sweeps all of this under the rug.

But I would also like to point out, per what I read in the article, this "fatwa" from Egypt is apparently not by itself a death threat. If I understand correctly, a fatwa is any kind of ruling by an Islamic religious "authority", and not binding on anyone who does not recognize such authority. It is not always a "death sentence", and certainly not on someone who lives outside any jurisdiction where Islamic "law" is recognized in court. AFAIK, the only time a widely-recognized Islamic theocracy attempted to claim otherwise was the 1989 "fatwa" by the Iranian dictator Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeni against Salman Rushdie, and that is probably where most westerners first heard the term. But it is a very atypical case.

TL;DR: There are certainly disturbing parallels here, but we shouldn't assume the worst just because the word "fatwa" is being used.
