Saw a bunch of hate against BPD people on Reddit

oof, I hate when we throw neuroscience around to enable a defeatists mentality.

When you talk about hypersensitivity in the brain you are actually proving u/vivvasisyphus point.

Do you know what other disorders hypersensitivity and other changes in the amygdala are seen?

PTSD

Panic Disorder

Agraphobia

BPD

and... ding ding ding... Alcoholism

(I personally would say that BPD is more akin to PTSD than alcoholism, but I think it's closer to alcoholism than it is to Cerebral palsy)

You know what happens in the brain when you slap people with PTSD with CBT & Talk Therapy..... The brain improves.

Sorry to say, stories of improvement are not anecdotal. We've known for decades that BPD is a highly treatable anxiety disorder.

1.

It's also misleading to say "Most doctors are not trained to diagnose the disorder." Most doctors aren't trained to differentiate most psychiatrist diseases. That's why psychiatrists exist

....this will go on for a while so you can skip to the next section....

There are a lot of neurological disorders that are very common and most doctors can't diagnose that's why neurologists exist.

There are a lot of cardiac disorders that are very common and most doctors can't diagnose that's why cardiologists exist.

There are a lot of GI disorders that are very common and most doctors can't diagnose that's why gastroenterologists exist.

There are a lot of lung disorders that are very common and most doctors can't diagnose that's why pulmonologists exist.

There are a lot of eye disorders that are very common and most doctors can't diagnose that's why ophthalmologists exist.

There are a lot of autoimmune disorders that are very common and most doctors can't diagnose that's why endocrinologists exist.

There are a lot of skin disorders that are very common and most doctors can't diagnose that's why dermatologists exist.

There are a lot of neurological disorders that are very common and most doctors can't diagnose that's why neurologists exist.

There are a lot of foot disorders that are very common and most doctors can't diagnose that's why podiatrists exist.

There are a lot of cell proliferation disorders that are very common and most doctors can't diagnose that's why oncologists exist.

Points 2 through 4 also applies to PTSD (and alcoholism).

  1. Some people with BPD benefit from low doses of different classes of drugs. Unless there is a comorbid disorder, then higher doses are necessary.

  2. Focusing on the other disorders does not mean you stop caring about the BPD. Treating BPD takes months to years. Treating comorbid disorders takes weeks to months and putting those disorders in remission can cause huge improvements in quality of life.

  3. Yes some people with BPD do qualify for disability. There is a huge spectrum, I know doctors and lawyers with BPD and I know people whose parents screwed them up so badly that it paints my heart.

But the same can be said for alcoholism. And your point is that it is extremely different... But you've only proved the point.

Perhaps it's too shameful for you to put yourself in the category of an alcoholic? I do not know.

Perhaps it would be better to put yourself to compare it with PTSD.

In much of the treatment, approaches are converging with treatment approaches to PTSD to the point where I personally think there is a benefit in putting BPD under the umbrella of PTSD (as a form of complex PTSD - caused by chronic parental invalidation).
