[serious] Audiologists of reddit who don't keep up with current research on hyperacusis (particularly physical causes and mechanisms), why?

You need to take into account that therapists are specialists in CBT and that they can apply to any situation. Severe cases of tinnitus and even hyperacusis, misophonia, etc can be addressed through therapy and working on changing your reaction.

Damage to the ear? Yeah great. Audiologists specialize in knowing about this but we cannot restore hearing. We cannot fix the damage. Those advancements in healthcare simply don’t exist yet. We can offer strategies to help compensate but you can’t “treat” this damage. I am up to date with hyperacusis and I can’t phantom what other audiologists have come up with/done to harm these people. Sometimes people blame the healthcare provider because we can’t 100% fix their problem and there’s no pill you can pop. That anger is often taken out on us. I don’t really have much else to add. I feel very well rounded and confident in my ability to offer advice. I suppose my response was more in terms of why I don’t spend endless hours on hyperacusis. I’m not a researcher. I have the skills I need to educate people on it and recommendations along with referral resources. There is more research that needs to be done until a better treatment is available.
