My sister and BIL had a house built in a development. It was a wooded area before, no previous homes. They replaced the locks immediately upon moving in, paranoid about any of the builders having a set. I ended up living with them for a year.
They went to Hawaii about 6 months after I moved in. I was home alone for two whole weeks! Third day in, I'm heading off to work. I double checked that all doors and windows were locked (it was a hot August day, they had all been open earlier.) I used the last of the TP upstairs & was rushing out the door. However, I made sure the front door was locked before heading down the street.
I got home after my shift, ran upstairs, used the bathroom & took a shower. I grabbed my laundry and went downstairs. While standing in the utility room, I realized that I never went back upstairs to replace the TP before I left for work. I distinctly remember that. How the hell was there a brand new roll in there?
That's when I clearly heard footsteps directly above me. It sounded like boots on hardwood floor. More specifically, just like my BIL's cowboy boots when he's walking in the den. No one else should have been in the house, and the room above me was carpeted.
I freaked out, thinking somebody must have broken in. I ran across the street to the neighbor, a cop, who was unloading groceries from his car. He dropped the groceries, told his wife to call the sheriffs department, grabbed a gun from his glove box and ran over to the house. This exchange took maybe 45 seconds total, in complete view of the front door. He came out about five minutes later and asked if I'm absolutely someone was in the house. I told him I know the difference in a house settling and footsteps, someone had to be in the house. He said there's no one in the house & everything is locked up. The sheriff's department arrived and does a check as well. Nobody's in the house. They took me in the house and did the usual "is anything missing or out of place?" Nothing, besides that roll of TP. I got stared at for that, and I know it sounds crazy, but I did NOT go back upstairs before I left, and I went immediately upstairs when I got home.
I insisted that they check under the beds, in the closets, in the attic and the crawlspace before I agreed that nobody could possibly be in the house. I refused to stay there alone after that, made two friends come over and stay with me while my sister and BIL were gone.
I lived there for about 6 more months. In that time I noticed a lot of weird shit start to happen. Like the smell of cigar smoke lingering in my room. At the time, nobody in the house smoked and definitely wouldn't have smoked in the house even if they did. I'd come home to my bedroom door shut when I left it open. Thought it was one of them doing it until one day when coming home at my normal time (I was now working graveyard regularly, got home at 630 am) & my sister was running late for work. She mentioned that I was getting home late. I asked what she meant and she said that my door was always shut when her and my BIL usually get up (5 am), so she thought that I got off of work before then. Nope, not even once, and I left for work after they had gone to bed. Things would go missing for days, only to show up in the most random spots. Found a steak knife in the washer once, as I went to do clothes. My cell phone showed up in a winter jacket in my sisters closet. She was pretty mad, thought I had been going through her stuff. Found a book I had last seen in my backpack in one of the kitchen drawers. My brother in law had a drawer full of office supplies. Every single pen was missing. Found twenty of them in the garage two days later, just sitting on the shelf. One of my nights off, it felt like my BIL's puppy had climbed up on my bed and was doing his circling/nesting bit before laying down. I reached out to pet him and he wasn't there. Then I heard puppy whines coming from the den. He was in his kennel.
But seriously, out of all of that, where the fuck did the TOILET PAPER COME FROM!?
