[Serious] People of Reddit, what kind of toxic people have you cut out from your life and why? Do you wish that you would have done it sooner?

A guy that was one of my closest friends for over a decade, we met in high school at 12 years old, I stopped being friends with him right before 24th birthday last year.

Because I got sober.

After high school, the only time I saw him (and other friends from that group that I also don't see anymore) was when we were partying, serious binge drinking. Nothing else in our friendship anymore. I tried to stop drinking so heavily once I was 22 but he would always peer pressure me. He didn't take my concerns for myself seriously, he was a terrible communicator as well and that bothered me.

I got sober not because I'm an alcoholic but because I have serious mental health issues and alcohol increased my self destructive and suicidal behaviours and landed me in the hospital several times.

Happily sober since May 2018. When it comes to friends it's quality over quantity! Don't have people in your life just because they have been around for a long time, people change and evolve.
