(Serious)Reddit if you wrecked your car, have no insurance and still owe on it. What is the best way to handle the towing company situation?

I used to work for an auto lender. Does your lender know about this yet? Depending on how you want this to turn out, getting in contact with them may be what you want to do. Since you didn't have insurance the lender can put in place what's called "Force Placed Insurance." The cost of the insurance will be placed against your account, but it will result in a check to be placed against your debt for the insurable amount of your car.

But before that can take place, the lender will need to coordinate with the tow truck company for them to acquire the vehicle, even if it is a wreck. The longer your car stays in in-pound, the more it will cost you. What you need to do to streamline this process is to get in contact with your lender, tell them where the vehicle is (company name, number, and address) and be ready to demonstrate that your insurance was canceled and when. With this info your lender will be able to get your car out of impound (stopping the daily fees) and start the insurance claim for your vehicle (paying down against what you owe). If they are able sell the vehicle for scrap, they will post the proceeds against you debt as well.

For obvious reasons a lot of people don't want to get in contact with the lender, but honestly lenders are very appreciative of customers who take initiative in these scenarios. Taking initiative can buy a lot of grace and sympathy from the lender. And you don't talk with the lender, the lender will try to go through these steps anyway, but the process will be much slower and probably wont be finalized because the fees will have grown by so much. So, this higher debt amount will later be processed in a small claims suit that will begin in about 3 months. When they win the claim against you they will have authority to garnish any wages you may earn between now and 10 years from now, until your debt is satisfied. And interest will be growing during that time. So unless you were already planning on living off the grid and under the table for the next 7 years, while you hold out for the statute of limitations, you should probably start paddling, cause shit creek gets longer as you wait. Best of Luck though, and keep in mind you'll be tougher and wiser on the other side.
