I used to do hospice work. I would basically move into people's homes for a few months and take care of them while they waited to die. Super depressing work but it felt meaningful. Didn't last long.

I had a job caring for a couple who were both dying of different ailments. The husband had an aggressive cancer in his bones. The wife had severe dementia. She had lost all perspective of time and would wander the house at odd hours, going to the bathroom, washing her hands and eating pudding before shuffling back to bed. All she ate was pudding. She never spoke. Part of my job routine was to check the house and make sure the sinks were turned off and that she hadn't left pudding laying around the house. In order to give me time off, a second caretaker we hired and we worked in shifts. The second caretaker was a stern Haitian woman who had done the job for years. Perhaps by necessity she was somewhat cold and detached. I never saw her smile. One night, when it was my shift, as I checked the wife's bedroom one last time (the husband couldn't sleep with her coming and going all night so they slept in separate rooms.) before bed, I saw that she was awake and beckoning me to come close. "Please" she whispered. I didnt even know she was capable of speech. Of course I came closer. "That other woman. She's horrible. She beats me" she whispered. I told the people who had hired me and they just laughed. "She says that about everybody".

That's not the creepy part, it's just kind of a weird side note. I honestly don't think she beat her.

The creepy part came after they died. The wife went first. The husband a week later. I left and got another job but the stern Haitian woman stayed behind and helped clean up their personal belongings. She lived in the house and slept there at night. That is, until one morning she woke up and the sinks were on.

She left that day and nobody could contact her afterward.

I think I saw her today. Seriously. Just a few hours ago. She was at the store. I hadn't seen her in years but I recognized her immediately. When she saw me, she studied my face for a while like she was trying to recognize my face. When she did, she smiled. (I finally saw her smile!) But then her eyes went wide and her face snapped back into a stern expression. She did not say hello.
