Somebody really bought into that whole "work" idea

Previous jobs I've almost always had some of this. While I'm away my work isn't getting done and it will all be piled up waiting for my return. Keep an eye on e-mail & slack so I stay in-the-loop... Makes taking time away a stressful be-in-two-places mentally exercise in double state stress management and it's not been actual time away.

My current gig is the first time I feel I have an actual healthy relationship with my work. Team is all arranged so everything keeps moving when any one or up to half of us are away. No big catch up when I return, just jump back in and all is well!

European family and friends also seem to manage this much better with more vacation and health time available that they're expected to take and schedules and "coverage" and staffing levels all accommodate people taking their time away.
