Stanford Swimmer Who Raped Unconscious Woman Gets Short Sentence Because Jail Would Have a ‘Severe Impact on Him’

I'll go against the popular opinion here.

There is no rape culture in the US. People commit rape in sporadic events not out of a culture that teaches them to rape people but rather as individuals making bad decisions. In this case two drunkards have sex and one claims rape.

The same can't be said of Africa where rape is epidemic. Where there are more raped girls(and men but thats not rape is it?) out there than girls in school. Where there are groups of gangs targeting women to rape as a means to silence opposition and as a means to control the society.

There's a issue of rape like there is a issue of violence, hate crime, etc. I'd say there's a culture of hate crime more so than culture of rape. There are forums where people go on to build those hate in themselves and allow others to be hateful towards a group of people for no reason. They target people to hate, then have events/meetings/gatherings on their hate. There are nothing like that for rape in the US.

There is instead a culture of men being seen as rapists and a danger to children. If accused, they are automatically a rapist and their life is ruined. To measure the punishment based on this culture's widespread assumption of men is unfair to those accused of rape. When the bar is lower for men to be fairly treated, the excess punishment happens to those simply being accused of such. Bill Cosby/Michael Jackson got their reputation tarnished based on accusations alone. Are they rapists/molesters? We don't know and we may never find out. The point is, the accused suffer due to the culture of bias against men in general.

As for this case, was it rape? Yes, did he get off lightly? Very much so. Couple years behind bars is a appropriate punishment for rape in my opinion. This case does not in any way validate the existence of a rape culture. A sliver of evidence might be presented to show that the Judge gives light sentences to rapists but that is simply a far fetch connection.
